Pet Safety Tips for Holidays
from
imPETS.com
New Year's Eve
- Keep confetti and balloons away from your pets. Ingesting confetti or
deflated balloons can make your pet very sick.
- Do not use noise-makers or fireworks around pets.
- Never leave alcoholic drinks unattended where pets can reach them.
Passover & Easter
- Keep all chocolate away from your pets. Chocolate is toxic to many animals and can even be fatal.
- Keep flowers and potted plants away from your pets. Many spring flowers and plants
may be poisonous to your pet if chewed or ingested.
- Holiday foods should be stored in secure containers and out of reach your pets.
- Never feed your pets fatty foods
or moldy or spoiled foods.
Fourth of July
- Keep your pets away from matches, lighter fluid, barbeques, and citronella candles.
- Do not use any sunscreen or insect repellent product on your pet unless it is labeled specifically for use on animals.
- Do not put glow ropes or jewelry on your pets or allow them to play with it.
- Do not use fireworks around pets and do not take them to loud, crowded Independence Day festivities.
Halloween
- Keep all candy and candy wrappers out of reach of your pets.
- During trick-or-treat time, keep your pets in a separate, quiet room so they do not run out the
front door or become scared of the costumes and noise.
- Keep lit jack-o'-lanterns and candles away from your pets.
Thanksgiving
- Never give leftovers to your pets. Cooked bones and holiday foods are especially unsafe for your pets.
- Make sure garbage and leftovers are taken care of right away so pets are not
tempted to dig through the trash. Secure your outside garbage cans so that stray or wild animals cannot get into them.
- Never feed your pets fatty foods
or moldy or spoiled foods.
Christmas, Hanukkah, &
Kwanzaa
- Fire and burns can be a threat to pets. Holiday hazards include
lit menorahs, kinaras, candles, potpourri pots, and fireplaces. Always keep your
pets away from these items.
- If you have a real Christmas tree, make sure your pets cannot drink the water from the stand.
Check around real trees often
for fallen needles. Sharp pine needles can puncture your pet's intestines if
swallowed.
- Do not use tinsel on your tree. Your pets could become sick from or choke on the tinsel.
_ Wrapping paper, ribbons, and bows can also cause intestinal problems in pets
if chewed or ingested. Be sure to dispose of these items promptly after
opening gifts.
- Many holiday plants (poinsettia plants, holly, mistletoe, lilies) are poisonous to animals. Keep these plants away from your pets.
-Keep holiday foods in secure containers and out of reach your pets.
Eating inappropriate foods can cause illness or intestinal obstruction in
animals.
- Keep candy, especially chocolate, away from your pets. Many ingredients in
candy can be toxic, even be fatal, to pets.
